Objectives:

  1. Epidemiology of substance use disorders in later life. 
  2. Assessment of substance use disorders in late life.
  3. Evidence-based treatments for substance use disorders that are safe in geriatric patients. 

As a result of this presentation, participants will be able:

  1. Understand current epidemiologic proportion of substance use disorders in older Americans. 
  2. Discuss the benefits and limitations of systemic rating scales in making the diagnosis. 
  3. Appreciate the respective importance of psychosocial treatments and medication-assisted treatment.
