Mass Attack Threat Factors Highlighted in US Secret Service Report, Featuring Insight from Joel Dvoskin

Joel Dvoskin, PhDThe US Secret Service has released its first ever report on the threat assessment of mass attacks. The report, which analyzed data and behavior over a number of years, found that the majority of attackers held conspiracy theories or hateful ideologies at the time of the attack. The report also found that over half of the attackers had experienced mental health symptoms prior to or at the time of their attacks. Joel Dvoskin, a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Arizona, commented that people with serious mental illnesses are not any more likely than anyone else to commit gun violence. The report hopes that communities will use it to come up with strategies to assess behavior and prevent violence before it happens.
