Tuesday, August 29, 2023 - 10:30am

Treating addiction is not just a medical duty, but a moral obligation that stands at the forefront of healthcare priorities. As we approach International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31, the significance of addressing addiction in Tucson cannot be overstated. Addiction tears apart lives, families, and communities, leading to devastating consequences.Healthcare providers bear the responsibility of alleviating this suffering, restoring hope, and saving lives.

Addiction is a disease that thrives in silence and stigma. By treating addiction, clinicians become advocates for breaking down these barriers, creating a culture of understanding and empathy. Tucson's community deserves access to compassionate care, where those struggling with addiction are met with nonjudgmental support.

Moreover, untreated addiction contributes to a surge in overdose deaths, an epidemic that claims lives indiscriminately. International Overdose Awareness Day reminds us of the urgency to take action. Physicians must be at the forefront of this battle, armed with evidence-based treatments, counseling, and community resources. By offering comprehensive care, they can help patients regain control over their lives and prevent tragic losses.

Four years ago, the University of Arizona’s Psychiatry Department – in partnership with the Veteran’s Administration – developed an Addiction Medicine Fellowship to train future physicians capable of treating addiction and educating other. Banner Health and the College of Medicine – Tucson and have started an Addiction Medicine Consult Liaison service and an outpatient clinic to further address the need for addiction treatment.

In Tucson, where the impact of addiction is palpable, physicians must stand as beacons of hope. Their commitment to treating addiction showcases the heart of medicine: to heal, alleviate suffering, and uplift the human spirit. Let us seize International Overdose Awareness Day as a rallying point to renew our dedication to fighting addiction, not just for a day, but for every day ahead.
