Learning Objectives:
- Examine state legislative, executive, and funding policies relating to treatment of substance-related conditions in emergency and inpatient hospital settings.
- Analyze current litigation surrounding initiating or referring for medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) in the hospital.
- Critique conflicting interpretations of the national MOUD-related standard of care in emergency and inpatient hospital settings.
- Explain a recent court decision recognizing the compulsive nature of opioid use disorder (OUD) and the decision’s potential impacts on OUD treatment.
- Describe public policy trends and activity affecting the treatment of substance use disorders.
