Creativity and Control in Psychiatry

Learning Objectives:

  1. Why is creativity important in psychiatry and human activity in general? Consider the cost of creativity and contrast this with the cost of maintaining the status quo.
  2. What kills creativity? Consider how creative people (all humans) can get stuck in uncreative patterns of behavior.
  3. Consider that our inherent creativity, playfulness, imagination, and curiosity can be grown by practicing nonattachment and being mindful of emotions that get in the way.

Falling Down Laughing: Understanding the Nuance of Treating the Narcoleptic Patient

Learning Objectives:

  1. Define the DSM-5 criteria for narcolepsy and understand the related anatomic structures and disease pathway (pathophysiology).
  2. Recognize possible challenges of the narcoleptic patient and understand potential lifestyle modifications that may be necessary.
  3. Explore treatment options, including novel pharmacotherapy therapeutic mechanisms pharmacotherapy and behavioral interventions.

The educational objective for Psychiatry Grand Rounds is to provide mental health professionals with updates on psychiatric topics with the goals of increasing knowledge, competence, and patient care. Psychiatry Grand Rounds are held on Wednesdays (September-May) from 12 to 1 p.m.
