Integrative Psychiatry Fellowship

Welcome to the Integrative Psychiatry Fellowship Training Program at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. We are pleased you are considering specialized training in Integrative Psychiatry. Our program is committed to training individuals who are dedicated, self-motivated, and excited to provide integrative mental health care to children, adolescents, and adults.

As defined by the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine and Health (https://imconsortium.org), Integrative Medicine (IM) “reaffirms the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient, focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic and lifestyle approaches, healthcare professionals, and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing.”  The emphasis on empirical evidence of effectiveness distinguishes IM from the original concept of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). An increasing number of approaches, such as mindfulness meditation or the use of Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation, previously considered “alternative,” are now developing a growing evidence base for their use within the context of mental health conditions. In many such cases, despite a growing body of evidence for efficacy and safety, it can take years for new scientific knowledge to be implemented into widespread clinical training.

Fellows will learn how to provide an evidence-based integrative approach to patients presenting with mental health concerns.  Fellows will learn how to present a biopsychosocial-spiritual formulation and treatment plan to patients using a person-centered approach to clinical decision-making. Example areas may include exploring the risks and benefits for nutraceuticals and mind-body medicine skills.

Fellows joining the Integrative Psychiatry Fellowship program who have completed a fellowship in Child/Adolescent Psychiatry will have the opportunity to work in the outpatient setting with children, adolescents, and adults.
