Study shows correlation between poor sleep and suicide risk in college-aged adults

Andrew Tubbs, PhDA study from the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson has found that poor sleep can have a negative impact on mental health, potentially leading to suicide. The researchers found that sleep problems can develop earlier than mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety and can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts. To improve sleep, the researchers suggest striving for 7-8 hours of sleep, being consistent with bedtime and wake-up time, limiting caffeine and avoiding phone use before bed. Help is also available through university counseling services or the new crisis line 988. Good sleep is important for both physical and mental health.
