Psychiatrists’ Plea: End the Abuses in Iran

Re “U.N. Pushes Consequences for Handling of Iran Revolt” (news article, Nov. 3):

Since the Women-Life-Freedom movement began in Iran in September, there has been disturbing evidence of the Islamic Republic’s abuse of psychiatry and psychology to suppress dissent.

The regime has reportedly sent protesting students to “correctional facilities” to prevent them from developing “antisocial behavior,” going so far as to label several of the murdered protesters mentally ill and suicidal.

In response to a petition signed by thousands of medical professionals, the American Psychiatric Association, together with 13 other prominent psychiatric associations, has issued a letter to the United Nations. In it, the A.P.A. urges the U.N. Human Rights Council “to act with urgency,” holding Iran’s government accountable for “human rights violations and abuse and misuse of psychiatry in Iran.”

To date, more than 300 deaths have been reported in Iran, with thousands more arrested, imprisoned and tortured. The A.P.A. continues to monitor the government’s use of psychological treatment facilities, conversion tactics and pro-regime mental health providers to “re-educate” and silence protesters, including children.

Every day, more lives and minds are at risk. The American mental health community is standing together, ready to channel more resources and support to Iranians in need of real care and healing.
