Reflections on Residency How do you reflect on residency in 250 words or less and truly express the magnitude of it all? The quick/easy approach (and likely the one they were looking for) would be to include a few perky anecdotes and move along, but that doesn’t speak to the depth of the experience, the humor and the tragedy inherent to the process, or the transformative nature fundamental to the training. In thinking of the individual growth, whose power in nature is equal in both the life it brings but also in the destruction it is capable of, it’s difficult to fully appreciate or even just reflect on those impactful experiences. There is the love of, and in the work, the people, and the process, but there are also the struggles, the heartache, and the challenges. Often these are experienced together rather than as separate or distinct. As you can see, in defiance of the specifics requested I find myself drawn to the nebulous/fuliginous aspects of the emprise but will still attempt to formulate a serviceable communicative construct that can hopefully distill a small amount of what the training can be. Completing residency is a lot like completing a Dark Souls game, but with fewer skeleton archers. People you would like to acknowledge Whether you are faculty, fellow resident, family, or friend and you have actually taken the time to read this; you have my deepest thanks and appreciation because likely you have done more than you know in helping me along the way. Reflections on Residency In reflecting on my time at the University of Arizona Psychiatry Residency Program, I remember speaking very early on with Drs Curry and Kalia about my passion for psychotherapy and requesting they put me with supervisors that would assist me in that endeavor. They did not disappoint. I had the pleasure of working with both Drs Lane and Pritchard for multiple years and both helped mold the psychiatrist I am today. Dr. Lane has a way of hearing what direction I wanted to go and illuminating more of that path in front of me. He led me to Dr. Brunet and his work on a propranolol-assisted psychotherapy technique, which I employed to great effect in a patient with prolonged grief disorder. I will always remember her and have begun writing a case report on it. This led me further towards other drug-assisted models including having the honor of working in Dr. Moreno’s psilocybin study for OCD. There I was able to not only screen and track changes in patient’s symptomatology, but sit with participants throughout their trips and help them integrate the sessions later on. Dr. Pritchard’s intense but crucial supervision hours, while only focusing on one patient, taught me concepts that applied to every other patient on my roster. Their guidance and words were a north star to orient myself by throughout much of my residency and add to the reasons I’ll forever cherish my time at this program. Reflections on Residency I'd say the last four years of residency has been exactly like the show Grey's Anatomy, if Grey's Anatomy were sexier. People you would like to acknowledge Dr. Kalia, Dr. Pritchard, Dr. Suhr, Dr. Racy, Dr. Lam, Dr. Singh, and Dr. Hu have all been integral in the past four years, and I would never have made it through residency without their patience and support, along with the kindness and support shown to me by my family and fellow residents. Reflections on Residency I have been pushed more than I ever thought possible all while developing and learning more than I thought I ever would. It is an interesting dialectic that has fostered resilience within myself. I am truly grateful for my mentors and what they have taught me over the last 4 years. I have learned how to transition from Doctor to Therapist and back when needed. My biggest take away has been developing the ability to improve cognitive flexibility. People you would like to acknowledge Thank you Dr. Morenz for your guidance, mentorship, and knowledge. I continue to learn from your supervision and your insight into patient's and their various problems has helped them and me succeed. Thank you Dr. Vaughan for your mentorship and guidance both professional and with the military. Your insight has unmasked several unknowns and your clinic guidance has uncovered when less is more. Thank you Dr. Suhr for helping me better understand behaviors, emotions, and thoughts. Thank you for instilling skills that will last a lifetime. Awards
